Studying in Canada is a major investment, and international students often find that their study permit needs to be changed or extended. Whether you must amend your study permit because of an error or extend it because your program is longer than expected, it is important to follow Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) rules carefully. A mistake or delay in your study permit extension application can affect your legal status in Canada and your ability to continue your education.

The Difference Between Amending and Extending Your Study Permit

An amendment is not the same as an extension. Amending your study permit means correcting an error made by IRCC on the document. This may include your name, date of birth, or work authorization conditions. An amendment does not change the expiry date.

By contrast, a study permit extension is when you apply to lengthen your time in Canada as a student. If your program takes longer than expected, or you want to pursue further studies at the same level or a new program, you will need to apply for a permit extension. Extensions require a full application form, supporting documents, and proof of ongoing enrollment at a designated learning institution (DLI).

Eligibility Criteria for Extending Your Study Permit

To extend your study permit, you must meet IRCC requirements and remain eligible as a student in Canada. In general, you must:

  • Hold a valid study permit at the time of application.

  • Apply before your current study permit expires.

  • Remain enrolled at a designated learning institution (DLI) with a valid DLI number.

  • Show proof of adequate financial support to cover tuition fees and living expenses.

  • Hold a valid passport, since a study permit cannot be extended beyond your passport’s expiry date.

  • Provide a provincial attestation letter (PAL) or territorial attestation letter (TAL) if required by your province or territory.

  • Include additional documents, such as a letter confirming enrolment, bio data page of your passport, and proof of ongoing status in Canada.

Failure to meet these criteria will likely result in refusal, meaning you may have to apply for restoration of status or even leave Canada.

Step-by-Step Process to Amend Your Study Permit

If your study permit contains an error, you may request an amendment. This is different from applying for a new study permit. To amend your permit:

  1. Complete the correct application form (Request to Amend Valid Temporary Resident Documents IMM 1436).

  2. Include proof of the error, such as a national identity document, birth certificate, or legal document confirming your details.

  3. Provide a copy of your current valid study permit.

  4. Gather supporting documentation, such as your original letter of acceptance or enrolment if the issue relates to study conditions.

  5. Submit the application by mail to the correct mailing address (Operations Support Centre in Ottawa).

  6. Include a detailed explanation of the amendment you are requesting.

Amendments are processed more quickly if the mistake was IRCC’s fault. However, you must ensure that all documents are accurate and match your valid passport and personal details.

Step-by-Step Process to Extend Your Study Permit

Extending your study permit is more complex than an amendment. Here is the process:

  1. Check your eligibility
Complete the eligibility questionnaire on the IRCC website. You will be issued a personal reference code that generates a personalized document checklist.

  2. Prepare your application
    Gather all required documents, including:

    • Letter of enrolment or original letter of acceptance

    • Proof of tuition payment and financial support for living expenses

    • Copy of your valid passport bio data page

    • If applicable, a provincial or territorial attestation letter

    • Any optional documents such as medical reports or client information notes

  3. Complete the application form online
Use the IRCC secure account or sign-in partner to access your online account. Fill in the details, upload your word documents or scans, and ensure your personal details are accurate.

  4. Pay your fees
The status fee and processing fee must be paid online with a credit or debit card.

  5. Submit your application
Once submitted, you will receive confirmation in your secure account.

  6. Provide biometrics if required
You may receive a biometrics instruction letter directing you to a designated testing agency.

  7. Wait for processing
Processing times vary. IRCC updates these times regularly. During this period, if you applied before your current study permit expires, you will be on maintained status (previously called implied status).

What Happens If Your Study Permit Expires Before You Apply?

If your study permit expires before you submit a permit extension application, you lose your student status. This means you cannot study until your status is restored.

You may still stay in Canada if you apply for restoration of status within 90 days, but you cannot attend classes until you receive your new study permit. Restoration requires:

  • Submitting a new study permit application.

  • Paying the restoration fee plus the standard status fee.

  • Providing a letter explaining why you did not apply before the expiration date.

If you do not restore your status, you will be required to leave Canada. In some cases, students apply for a visitor visa while waiting, but this does not allow you to resume studying.

Tips for a Successful Application

Here are practical strategies to avoid mistakes and increase your chance of success:

  • Apply early: Submit your extension at least 30-60 days before your permit expires.

  • Check your passport: Ensure your passport is valid beyond the date you need your permit.

  • Remain enrolled: You must stay registered at a designated learning institution throughout your studies.

  • Provide proof of funds: Show enough money for tuition, living expenses, and travel costs.

  • Keep your documents updated: Ensure your medical exam is valid, especially if you are from a designated country.

  • Avoid gaps in studies: If you defer or switch programs, make sure to update IRCC with a new letter confirming enrolment.
